General Recruitment Tips

Make new friends! Your time at each sorority will fly by but you cannot expect to find a home if you sit back and let them do the work.
Avoid talking about touchy subjects such as politics, religion, partying, or anything that could make someone uncomfortable
Keep your opinions about each sorority to yourself and try not to allow yourself to be influenced by others. Joining a sorority is a personal decision and you should not let others’ words or rumours change your opinion of any sorority.
Read the conversation tips for each round and stay informed!
Use your Formal Recruitment Handbook to help you keep your thoughts and feelings organized. This handbook should help you reflect on your values and the things that are important to you.
Be open-minded. If you do not get invited back to your top selections, do not be disappointed. You might meet an incredible woman from a chapter and you don’t want to miss out on that opportunity.
There is no “best” or “worst” chapter. Each chapter does the same activities (sports, formals, etc.) and has its own strengths and weaknesses from year to year. Most importantly, the women in each chapter have found a home in it and there is a home waiting for you in UBC Sororities!
Look presentable! This doesn’t mean wearing layers of makeup or buying new clothes; it means arriving well rested and being confident at every round of recruitment. The rooms can get quite hot so it’s best not to wear clothing that is too warm. If you have any questions about the ‘dress code’ of each round, please ask your RC!
Feel free to bring mints, deodorant, hand cream, etc. Avoid wearing strong perfume, as it will be very crowded.
We recommend a small cross body purse for your essentials, but not a large bag.
Avoid using your phone during a round!
Organize your time well during recruitment. As these are long days, make sure you are on top of your schoolwork and don’t let it all pile up. We all came to UBC to get a degree so make sure that you prioritize your academics!

Conversation Question Guide

During recruitment, the sorority women will be asked the same questions again and again. Try to think of questions that will help you stand out! Here are some examples of meaningful questions.

How has being in a sorority helped you grow?
What aspect of Greek life has impacted you the most?
What is your biggest accomplishment since joining a sorority?
What is the most challenging part about being in a sorority?
What are the most rewarding factors about being in a sorority?
Who inspires you most in your chapter?
When were you most proud of your chapter?
What is one factor that your sorority could improve on?
What values attracted you to join your sorority?
What were you looking to get out of your sorority experience?
What has been a goal that you would like to reach within your chapter?
How does your sorority membership positively affect other parts of your life?
Other than long-lasting friendships, what do you want to get your of your sorority membership?
Did you have any concerns when you first joined your sorority? How did you overcome them?
Are you or your sisters involved in any other organizations?
What is one characteristic about your sisters that you value most?
In what ways have your sisters supported you through your university experience?
Is there anyone in particular that you would like to get to know better this year? Why?
How does your chapter help new members integrate into the chapter during the new member process?

Choosing a Sorority

After each round of recruitment, you will select your initial favourite sororities via our online selection system. We highly recommend reflecting on your values that you inputed in your Formal Recruitment Handbook. Some questions to ask yourself:

Do my values align with the sororities I selected?
Did I feel a connection with something an active member said?
Do I see a potential for growth in the sororities I selected?

Remember that you are not guaranteed a visit to you top selections or the maximum number of parties for the next round. In fact, it is not common to receive the maximum number of invitations. When you do receive your invites for the next round, these are the sororities that would like to get to know you even better. Even if you don't receive an invitation from your initial "favourite" sorority, it doesn't mean that they didn't like you; they may just see you shining brighter in another chapter!

Be true to yourself and do not let anybody else influence your selections. The recruitment matching system is designed to place everybody in a sorority where there is a mutual fit. If you attend all your rounds with a positive attitude and follow the recruitment advice provided, you have a very good chance of being placed in a sorority at UBC.

On Bid Day, if you receive a bid to the sorority that you marked as your second preference, do not be alarmed. Go to the Bid Day celebration and make an effort to get to know the women in this chapter. Sometimes it will take time to adjust and make friends; don’t assume that you will automatically become best friends with everybody on Bid Day. Friendship is a mutual process and you have to attend events to get to know everyone. After a few months of membership, many members who did not get their top choice end up saying that they can’t see themselves anywhere else!
