Recruitment is made up of three events filled with fast-paced excitement! You will have the opportunity to meet many new people including sorority women and other potential new members like you. On the first day of recruitment you will be assigned to a group made up of other potential new members and two Panhellenic Guides (Pi Gammas). As a group you will get the chance to meet all eight sororities on our campus. This will be a time for you to meet with members of each sorority, talk with them and learn about what makes each sorority unique. It is also a chance for the sororities to get to know you. Over the week a process of mutual selection is used, where students accept and decline invitations to recruitment events until membership offers are extended by the chapters. Recruitment is meant to be informative and exciting. All you need to do is relax and be yourself!
The goal of Formal Recruitment is to give you enough information and introduce you to as many people as possible in order for you to make choices about what opportunities you would like to get involved in at UBC – therefore, it is in your best interest to attend all three events. The events have been planned to accommodate religious holidays and minimize conflict with classes and work schedules. Those who wish to join a sorority through Formal Recruitment will need to attend all three events.
Going through recruitment does not mean you have to join a sorority. The object of recruitment is to meet all the different sororities on campus and see what they can offer you. Hopefully, you will meet some wonderful people and want to join a sorority but if you feel sororities are not for you, that is okay. Going through recruitment and attending the functions does not commit you to joining.
Not at all! Recruitment and the opportunities we highlight offer advantages for all university women, regardless of age or year in school. No matter what year you are in, these events will be enjoyable, interesting and informative!
Of course! Although Formal Recruitment (typically held in the first couple weeks of class in September) is our main recruitment event, we also hold events throughout the school year for you to join a sorority. If you did not participate in formal recruitment but are interested in checking out sorority membership, please let us know and we will keep you posted on upcoming events throughout the year.
There is no strict dress code for Formal Recruitment; you will see women wearing a range of outfits. The most important thing is to be comfortable and be yourself.
Tours, the first day of recruitment, is casual. Jeans with a casual top would be a nice choice for this part of recruitment.
Invitationals, second day of recruitment, is a little more formal. A casual skirt or nice pants would be a good choice.
Preference, the final day of recruitment, is the most formal. Usually women wear a sun dress, skirt or dress pants. Outfits worn on this day of recruitment are the type that might be worn to a luncheon.
Bid Day is when sororities extend membership invitations to new members. You will get your sorority’s t-shirt to wear and you will meet up with the members of YOUR sorority! Wear casual bottoms such as a pair of jeans, a tank top (for layering) and comfortable shoes.
Please remember that these are only suggestions and you are welcome to wear whatever you like to Formal Recruitment; however, comfortable shoes are always a good idea!
The registration fee for Formal Recruitment is $20, which covers meals at all three events. Please pay online via Paypal. Please register online in advance; payments made at tours increase to $25 and you must pay the fee in order to participate as it pays for meals at all three days of recruitment and transportation to preference venues.
