Are sororities just like the ones on TV or in the movies?

Each sorority is different. UBC has eight sororities, all with unique characteristics and diverse women. The images portrayed on TV or in movies do not reflect the attitude of the sororities at UBC. We stand for leadership, friendship, scholarship, charity and social development.

What is the time commitment for a sorority?

Each sorority has different events that are considered mandatory. In general, each organization requires a commitment every Wednesday night for chapter meetings, and a few other days throughout each semester for special events. In your first term as a member, you will also participate in your sorority’s membership education program, where you will learn about your sorority’s history, structure, and the responsibilities and privileges of membership. Your participation in Greek life should not detract from your responsibilities; in fact, the majority of members manage to hold down jobs and focus on their studies while still having an active presence in their chapters.

If I choose to join a sorority, how will I cover the membership dues?

Like any organization, sororities require fees to put on great programs and activities for their members. However, unlike many clubs, sororities have various scholarships and payment plans to assist in covering these costs. Ask the sorority members you meet during formal recruitment about what payment options are offered. Financial concerns should not keep any student from joining a sorority.

Is housing available?

Both fraternities and sororities offer affordable housing options to their members. Each fraternity has its own house located either in the Greek Village or centrally along Wesbrook Mall. The Greek Village is also home to the Panhellenic House, which offers apartment-style residences for sorority women. While Greek housing provides an excellent residential experience on campus, it is not a requirement of membership.
